Cinco celebrations for Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de mayo is great for a couple of reasons. The music is bumping, the food is sizzling and the liquor is flowing. But almost more importantly, it means the school year’s almost finished. Reward yourself for a job well done on your Saturday finals and forget about the dreadful week ahead for the night with these five celebrations.

Cantina Laredo
12 p.m. Saturday to 12 a.m. Sunday, 1680 29th St.
With live music and $5 “Cinco Mas’ritas,” you can’t go wrong. Mexican folk music starts the day off from noon to 1 p.m. A mariachi band and magician keep the party going from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and a DJ takes the celebration into the night at 9 p.m.

The Boulder Loft
7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, 1710 29th St.
Take a more serious look at the holiday with a Peers Building Justice showcase. The event features art created by high school students exploring violence prevention and gender identity. There will also be food from Pupusas Sabor Hispano and dancing.

Centro Latin Kitchen and Refreshment Place
11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, 950 Pearl St.
Delve into some Latin flavor with $5 tacos and margaritas and $3 Top Rope lager.

Absinthe House
10 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday, 1109 Walnut St.
Get your “cinco de drinko” on at Absinthe with $2 Kamikaze shots, $3 domestic beers, $5 Jager bombs and tunes from DJ Schroeder because well, tequila is overrated.

Civic Center Park (Denver)
10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 101 West 14th Ave. Denver
It’s worth the trip to Denver’s Civic Center Park for the 25th annual cultural celebration. The festival is the largest of its kind in the United States. The weekend kicks off with a parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday that travels from Colfax and Welton to Lincoln and 13th. The festival keeps on rolling with everything from concerts and a carnival to a Chihuahua race and a green chili bowl cook-off. Enjoy music presented by KBNO, while checking out the lowrider car exhibit, sipping on some Tecate and grubbing on authentic Mexican food.
